Okay, call me slow, but I had never heard of a Book Meme before reading about one on www.collectingmycash.com. Sure, I’ve done email chains before, but not about books and I’ve never heard of a Meme. What a cool word, and a great idea!

Hi

A friend put me onto this site so I thought I’d come for a look. I really like some of your articles as well as the inspiring quotes. I’m a book lover so here’s my answers.

What was the last book you bought?
- The Persimmon Tree by Bryce Courtenay

Name a book you have read MORE than once
- Tuesdays with Morrie

Has a book ever fundamentally changed the way you see life? If yes, what was it?
- Yes, but having trouble thinking of one right now. Tuesdays with Morrie did make me think alot about what’s important in life

How do you choose a book - eg. by cover design and summary, recommendations or reviews
- all three. I read alot of books

Do you prefer Fiction or Non-Fiction?
More fiction, but it does depend on why I am reading. Sometimes I want to learn about something or a real life person inspired me, but mostly I read to relax and escape and that’s fiction

What’s more important in a novel - beautiful writing or a gripping plot?
I guess writing. I like good descriptions and language that stays with me. But then if it’s boring, that’s no good either

Most loved/memorable character (character/book)
- Jo from Little Women. I think I may be a frustrated writer!

Cheers
Rachel

What was the last book you bought?
“Mannen som Hatar Kvinnor” (The Man Who Hated Women. Nnot sure that will be the English translation but the (Swedish) author is Stieg Larsson and it is part of The Millenium trilogy, soon to be published in English in Australia and which has sold extremely well wordwide. I haven’t started it yet as I am in the middle of (gripping!) “Zorro” by the great Chilian author Isabel Allende.

Name a book you have read MORE than once
Not sure I ever have, actually. There are just too many books to read out there!

Has a book ever fundamentally changed the way you see life? If yes, what was it?
I was profoundly moved by Romain Gary’s writing when I first started reading him around the age of sixteen and my admiration hasn’t really stopped.

How do you choose a book - eg. by cover design and summary, recommendations or reviews
A bit of all three but also very much by the author, of course.

Do you prefer Fiction or Non-Fiction?
Fiction. It’s total escapism for me, just like a beautiful film.

What’s more important in a novel - beautiful writing or a gripping plot?
The plot is crucial but so is the writing…..I love stumbling upon a fantastic sentence and will read it over and over again, underline it with a pen and write it down in a notepad. I used to do that with Romain Gary’s books; I just couln’t help myself…. These would become like inspiring little quotes for me.

Most loved/memorable character (character/book)
Hard question…Recently, I very much enjoyed the main characters in: Shantaram (what an amazing book!), The World According to Garp, Catch Me if You Can, Tourism (by Nirpal Singh Dhaliwal), Eat, Pray, Love (although I found her extremely irritating at times so overall I preferred the book to the character), anything by William Boyd, etc etc!!

Thanks for your input ladies. I now have some new books to add to my “To Read” list. I’ve always looked at TUESDAYS WITH MORRIE and have never picked it up, but maybe it’s time. Ditto, WOMEN WHO RUN WITH WOLVES - have also heard of that.

Caroline, I love SHANTARAM. A truly great book; can’t wait for the movie with Johnny Depp. And THE WORLD ACCORDING TO GARP is one of my favorite novels.

De-lurking because I love books too much to pass up this meme…

What was the last book you bought?

THE WAY THE CROW FLIES

Name a book you have read MORE than once

LOVE - by TONY MORISSON

Has a book ever fundamentally changed the way you see life? If yes, what was it?

A LONG WALK TO FREEDOM (autobiography of NELSON MANDELA)

How do you choose a book - eg. by cover design and summary, recommendations or reviews

I OPEN THE BOOK AND READ ONE PAGE - IF I WANT TO CONTINUE READING I BORROW OR BUY IT

Do you prefer Fiction or Non-Fiction?

FICTION (with a side of non-fiction)

What’s more important in a novel - beautiful writing or a gripping plot?

BEAUTIFUL WRITING

Most loved/memorable character (character/book)

DON’T KNOW - i connect with books on the basis of their atmosphere, not on characters usually. Only one character I really DISliked: the protagonist in The Kite Runner. I really felt disgusted by him. Which makes the book well-written, I guess…
