New Look SHE-POWER, and Reader Help Required!

by Kelly on November 20, 2008 · 30 comments

in Creativity. Writing. Blogging

Sorry for the lag between posts, but the past week SHE-POWER has been undergoing renovations. After 18 months I thought it was time the site had a new look, and so here it is!

The job’s not finished yet as I still want to customize the header more and change the color of the sidebar headings (simple, but I haven’t figured it out so far). The important thing is most of the major construction is done; I just need to call in a decorator to finish things up.

So far, this has been very much a D.I.Y project and when you’re as technically un-handy as me, that makes website changes a lengthy and laborious job.

The new look is thanks to the THESIS theme, and I’d like to thank Marelisa (Abundance-Blog.Marelisa-Online) and Robin (Let’s Live Forever) for recommending it to me, and trying to help me troubleshoot when my theme upload and WordPress update went pear shaped. In the end, I needed the trusty (though definitely not speedy) help of Bluehost Support, but after much ado the site is up and I am very pleased with the redesign.

To be honest, while THESIS is promoted as the theme to end all themes - versatile and easily customizable by anyone - I wasn’t sure how much I would be able to do without paying for some expertise. But I have to admit, so far I am very impressed. The CSS has taken some getting used to ( I’ve always coded in html and figured it out as I go), but the support forums are extremely helpful and I think anyone with some patience and logic can buld themselves a distinctive website.

If you’re wondering if the THESIS links are affiliate, they are. But I wouldn’t recommend the product if I didn’t like it and think it’s a great theme for all the technically challenged bloggers out there.

Taglines. Taglines. Taglines

The absence of, and search for, a tagline for SHE-POWER has been the greatest pain in my behind since I started this blog. If you’re a long time reader, you’ll know I mentioned this in my 1 Year Anniversary post, but the past six months still haven’t provided me with a tagline that I feel suits this blog.

I have a brainstorming file that goes forever, but the past week alone has seen me change the tagline at least four times! Ideas are not my problem. Decision making seems to be my problem. I’ve even questioned whether I need a tagline at all, but I think my blog name alone does not provide new readers with a sense of what SHE-POWER is about.

The current:

Searching for Inspiration and Wisdom. Laughing at Life Along the Way

suits me as a person, but does that also mean it suits the blog?

I think part of the problem is the lack of a clear niche for this blog, but that’s not something I intend on changing. I do write about a few topics and I like to keep my options open - I guess that’s my attitude to life in general.

One way you can help me out though in targeting the future direction of this blog, and maybe deciding on a tagline, is to answer these questions:

Why do you read SHE-POWER?

What is unique about this blog? What do I offer that I should be shouting from the roof tops?

Do you have any suggestions for how I can improve the CONTENT or LOOK of this blog?

What do you think of the new tagline, and do you have any other suggestions?

And this is nitpicky, but do you think the new smaller photo with wraparound text post style is better or worse than the old way I laid out posts? See here.

If you could give me your thoughts on any or all of these life changing questions, i would much appreciate it. The fate of the free world (or at least this corner of it) is in your hands :)

And with that, I’ll leave you until Sunday. It’s my 10 year wedding anniversary this weekend and Musicman and I have a few days to ourselves while my wonderful, super generous mother looks after Bunny.

In the mean time, I will try to think of something profound to say about marriage since I’m such an expert after 10 years :)

Hey…I like your new look much better!! I’ve been looking into the thesis theme myself for the launch of a new site. I’m glad to know now who I can turn to for technical help….LOL!!!

I have been attracted to the domain name of she-power because it spells confidence, laughter, femininity, joy, whackiness, forthrightness and authenticity. Your personality shines through your blog!! I like the tagline “laughing at life along the way”!

Because I am visual, I prefer to have larger images. However, the location where you have your image (whether big or small) is considered a “hot” spot by online marketing experts and according to them, it makes financial sense to place google adsense or an ad there.

Thanks for the feedback Evelyn. I laughed at the ‘wacky’ and ‘forthright’ as that’s definitely my perception of me. I also prefer larger pictures because I’m visual, but Musicman likes this layout and thinks I should give it a shot, so we’ll see…

I like the look Kelly! You’ve done well!! (so, maybe you’re becoming more technically-savvy than you realize…)

Why do I read? Kelly - your words jump out at me - in brash ways. You speak your mind. That is one thing I know I’ll find here - authentic Kelly. Not sugar-coated. You do well with humor also, and that makes for fun reading. I also really like your fictional stories - you are a talented writer in this arena. Continue to build that up. And, I think Evelyn said it very well - when she said your personality shine through here - it really does! I read here and I feel like I know you.

Your tagline: I like it. It fits well. I’d ask you, does it fit with your blog’s name (it might - I think this is personal to what you believe)? What does SHE-POWER say to you?

The photo - I like the wrap around look.

Very nice all around Kelly! SHE-POWER: Webmistress at Work

Hi Kelly - I had to come out of my reader to make sure I saw all of this. I love the new theme. Thesis is great and if I switched from Revolution, this is a theme I’d definitely consider.

Definitely wrapping the writing round the text looks better. The only problem I had was if the picture was too wide and there was only a titchy bit of room for the writing. But you can change the code if you get that problem - you just remove the line that says float lef.

I love reading this blog because you write really interesting stuff that people want to read. Also, I like your fiction section. I honestly think you should keep writing the type of stuff you do. It’s always interesting - and I know I’ve said it before but I don’t think you need to have a narrowly focused niche.

I know some folk do - but I think the way you write is enough to bring folk back. And I know I was late reading your last two posts - but I wasn’t feeling too great, so I stopped reading anything for a few days.

What attracted me to your blog as a new reader is the title “She-Power”! What more can I say? The title seems to give women a strong voice, and steady place to stand on. I also like the attitude in your post, unique and authentic! What’s best? The different areas in life that you cover!

Congratulation on your wedding anniversary!

7 Betsy Wuebker 11.20.08 at 10:37 pm

Hi Kelly - I love it, love it, love it!! We have the Thesis theme, too, and I didn’t know my A$$ (as Cath’s winner, I get to say it everywhere for how long again?) from a hot rock when I started using it. I still don’t, but it was so easy to customize the backgrounds and our header, which we brought from our previous online “home.”

We’re no-niche, too. Maybe somebody knows what our niche is. If so, would they tell us? You are you, and just keep it that way. Narrow focus is great, but what happens when you change your mind? This is an earth-shattering thing to contemplate! Or not. Just keep writing.

Photos - I think you can hang as many pictures on the wall as you dang well please! It’s your digs! I love punctuating posts with photos, and the layout of this theme seems to want them to interrupt wordy ribbons on the left side. One thing I don’t yet understand is why SOME text wraps and other text DOESN’T. It seems to be a function of captioning the photos, and as Pete wants credits put on all (not just his) the photos on our site, now I don’t seem to get routine wrapping of text. Poop!

Say, how did you get the RSS widget soooooo big? I love it!

Great job!

Love the new look. Much cleaner. It makes me want to change my theme too.

I would just have one suggestion to put your tagline in either your title tag after she-power or meta tag.

Well done!

Why do you read SHE-POWER? … because you are the me that was … if that makes sense.

What is unique about this blog? What do I offer that I should be shouting from the roof tops? … honesty. This is who Kelly is. This is who Kelly was. This is Kelly at her worst. This is Kelly at her best. In other words, you share what you see and experience, and that helps me either examine who I am, or examine the world around me.

Do you have any suggestions for how I can improve the CONTENT or LOOK of this blog?… I LIKE IT! (btw, my is being designed as we speak … um, write …but a friend of mine is doing it because I have no patience for this type of thing)

What do you think of the new tagline, and do you have any other suggestions? … I think you are searching for inspiration and wisdom (aren’t we all!) and your blog shares this journey.

And this is nitpicky, but do you think the new smaller photo with wraparound text post style is better or worse than the old way I laid out posts? See here. … Definitely prefer the wrap around.

Why do you read SHE-POWER? I like your energy and enthusiasm. Also honesty and different perspective.

What is unique about this blog? What do I offer that I should be shouting from the roof tops? Good writing, fiction and non-fiction.

Do you have any suggestions for how I can improve the CONTENT or LOOK of this blog? Personally I prefer more photos or other color — a header with a photo or background, for example. Sounds like the others disagree, though.

What do you think of the new tagline, and do you have any other suggestions? I like it.

And this is nitpicky, but do you think the new smaller photo with wraparound text post style is better or worse than the old way I laid out posts? With my screen resolution (640 x 480), the wrapped text goes beyond the grey box around it. Like the photo and would like the wrapping if there was room for it.

Why do you read SHE-POWER?
Because you write well; make me think; and entertain me.

What is unique about this blog? What do I offer that I should be shouting from the roof tops? Your own voice. It’s very unique.

Do you have any suggestions for how I can improve the CONTENT or LOOK of this blog? No!

What do you think of the new tagline, and do you have any other suggestions? I think it’s too long, but I don’t have any suggestions. :(

And this is nitpicky, but do you think the new smaller photo with wraparound text post style is better or worse than the old way I laid out posts? I liked the old format (bigger pictures) better.

Happy anniversary!

Looks great!

I read She-Power because I like the way you write, your honesty, and the way you think. I really don’t think you should change anything about how you write or what you write about I like the tagline but I’m not sure if it fits with the idea of power. I love the “laughing at life along the way” part.

I prefer the images the way they are in this article.

Happy 10 years!!

Hi Kelly: I’m glad you got everything fixed, I was worried about you. I never thought I’d see the day when I’d be given others advice on technical stuff :-) Your blog looks fabulous. To answer your questions:

- I like the wrap around text better.
- I think there’s a bohemian feel to your writing, which is one the things I like about stopping by here (it reminds me of the year I spent bumming around Italy). I also think the driving force behind your blog is your personality, so the tag line should reflect that in some way.

Have a great Anniversary!

Hi Kelly - First, Happy 10th Anniversary. Enjoy the celebration.

It’s a good thing I first read this in my reader, otherwise I would have thought I was on the wrong blog.

What I like about your blog is your authenticity. You are who you are and don’t pull any punches nor do you pretend to be something/someone you are not and that shows in your writing. You willingly share your feelings whether positive, negative or humorous. From reading your comments, many of your readers can identity with that which you write about.

With regard to your tag line, because you share so much, I’m thinking, “Sharing Inspiration, Wisdom and Laughter” or something like that.

I like the wrap-around text. It seems to be the “craze”, however, on some posts if you want the photo to span the column, that should be an easy task.

Hi Kelly,
LOVE the new look! Happy Anniversary and enjoy your alone time with musicman. I have often said I don’t know what Ray and I would have done if it wasn’t for my mom helping and taking the kids sometimes!

I know I have said it umpteen times but I LOVE your writing. Your voice, humor and the ability you have to write fictional characters is SUCH a great talent. I also love when you share just about life.

Congrats Kelly — on 10 years, on 18 months blogging and on your new look — LOTS of things to celebrate!

Love,
Jenny

Hi Kelly - congrats on the new layout, and big congrats with the 10 yr anniversary! It was a pleasant surprise to see the redesign. Great photo and bio tagline, too :)

I actually like your personal tagline - it would be a nice one for this blog. If I had to be nitpicky, perhaps modify “Searching for Inspiration and Wisdom…” to “Blogging for Inspiration and Wisdom…” to tie it even stronger to the blog?

Hi Kelly,
I can’t comment too much on what was because I just found your site tonight through Evelyn Lim, Attraction Mind Map site. But I love what you are doing here…in fact I am adding you to my blogroll and emailing a couple friends who fit the way you describe yourself to a tee. Great blog and I look forward to returning!

PS….I love the line of “laughing at life along the way”. I am a Laughter Yoga Instructor and agree with laughing as much as possible!!!

I really appreciate everyone giving me their reader feedback. You’ve all been very kind. Re. the tagline, I agree it should match me and SHE-POWER and this is what I’m finding the biggest challenge. Thanks to those of you who ave shared some of your ideas. MusicMan and I also brainstormed some more over the weekend, but I still don’t think I’ve found the right one. So don’t be surprised if you see the tagline change a bit while I pay around with some of my ideas. If you think any is a winner please let me know.

As for the photo style, for now I’m going to stay with the wraparound text, but some posts might be different if it seems appropriate to have a large image.

@Al
So good to hear from you! I’ve missed you around the blogaspere. Please tell me you’re just on a break and we’ll see some more posts at 7P soon.

Just to clarify, I thought the question was how did I like the text wrapped around YOUR photo, so that’s what I answered.

As far as wrapping around a smaller image, that’s what they guys at MenWithPens recommend, but I prefer a bigger picture myself.

@Dot
Okay, I get you. I tried wrapping my photo but I didn’t like the look of it. As for the smaller images and wrap text in posts, think I’ll try it for awhile. I’m not sure about it either as I like big images. But I’m trying to come up with an image for my header, so once that’s on, I think this post image size will be perfect.

Thanks for taking the time to let me know your thoughts, Dot.
